Stardard TV compared to HDTV, compliments of www.techweb.com

HDTV or High Definition Television, is a high-resolution TV, and was introduced in 1998. HDTV is supposedly going to replace the standard TV in the very new future. Even though just a few stations are broadcasting in HDTV, the rest of the country should follow very soon.

What exactly makes HDTV different from regular TV.
One thing that makes HDTV differ from standard television sets is what is called the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio on the standard TV is 4:3 and the HDTV aspect ratio is 16:9. Now what that means is that there are more lines and more pixels on the HDTV which in turn makes the detail on the HDTV sets much much more defined. Also, since the HDTV is wider, you get to see more of your movies than what you would on a standard TV. If you've ever rented a regular VHS movie, at the beginning of the movie it says that its been formatted to fit your TV screen. With an HDTV it's not the case, because the screen is wide, nothing is shrunk to fit your screen and cut out off the side.
